Question by terrilhut: I need to find some financial help in order to have back surgery?
OK, a friend of mine who is a missionary, needs to have back surgery. I’ve already talked with someone at the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa Florida and all they need is the assurance that this surgery will be paid for. I just need to know how and where I can get some financial help with this.

One place you could check to see if they know of resources to help with this kind of surgery is the city health dept.

Also, get in touch with the church that your friend is doing missionary work for to see if they know of some places.

There is one place that a friend of mine used to help with surgery that is called Interfaith Ministries or something like that and they were able to help with the cost and it doesn’t matter what the religious affiliation is. I will try to get a hold of her and find out the exact name.

Sounds like a pinched bulging disk. The material between the disks bulges out, and when you sit down you compress the disks and the nerves and there’s pain!

I highly suggest you go to the doctor. They have good physical therapy now, surgery is the last resort. I’m getting 8 needles in my spine next week, but they put me in a “twilight” sleep and I don’t feel a thing!

Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spine canal narrows and compresses the nerves of the spinal cord. Dr. David Nygaard treats patients for an array of pain and spinal issues at Atlas Family Chiropractic in Asheville, NC. He says that, “Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal openings in one or more of three locations, in the center of the spinal canal, where the nerves branch from the spinal cord or in the space between the vertebrae. Nygaard adds that “Spinal stenosis affects the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine and sometimes several places at the same time.”

Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Like many spinal conditions that impair proper nerve function, spinal stenosis can develop without symptoms. Symptoms can develop gradually and worsen over time. Symptoms include: pain in the back and/or neck, numbness, tingling or radiating pain in the extremities and muscle weakness in the extremities.

Causes of Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is often a common occurrence of spinal degeneration that occurs as people age. Degeneration is associated with disc bulging, spinal joint enlargement, the development of bone spurs and the thickening or buckling of ligaments. Stenosis can also be caused by spinal disc herniation, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, injuries or trauma, ligament thickening or the presence of a tumor.

Compression Causes Problems

Dr. Nygaard explains that the pinching or compression of spinal nerves and blood vessels leads to health issues, including pain. “Stenosis in the lower back can lead to a condition called cauda equina syndrome that results from compression within the spinal canal.

The lumbar back pain is a painful inflammation of the lumbar or lower back area, the causes may be:

- Efforts in the wrong position: to work continuously in poor posture, long time ironing clothes, lift many weights, doing some field work.

- A pulled muscle: Sometimes a sudden movement can trigger it. Quite often when we do physical exercise without warming.

- Intestinal gas and constipation: it is curious how many people with gas or abdominal bloating suffer chronic constipation. The weakness of the abdominal muscles is the cause.

- Muscle tension stress: lack of muscle relaxation gets back and just weakening the area.

- Mechanical problems that weaken the area as osteoarthritis and disc herniation.Some people have one leg longer than the other, most of these cases only indicate that the spine has scoliosis deformity.

- Go wrong footwear: high heels excessively oblige adopting a position that creates an ongoing tension in the lumbar region.

In bed, put a pillow under your back or under your knees if you sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them. Join gradually to daily activities. If you must lift weights, bend your knees to force and make them keeping the object close to your body.

Also lose weight if overweight. Do not stay too long sitting or standing. Perform each exercise for 2 hours stretching the lumbar musculature: in a standing position bend forward and backward. Avoid sudden movements, adopt good posture, warm up before exercising. Do exercises in the workplace. Use belt at the waist for all work activities that require straining or indispensable demonstrations involving the lumbar spine.

I am looking for scholarships dealing with spinal injuries as there basis. I injured my self in the military ( and I have contacted the VA offices in the schools) and had spinal surgery when I was 18 , and I am 19 know. Any help would b great.

The best thing is to apply to the scholarship in your school. Go the financial aid office and ask them for information on them.

I don’t recommend that you waste your time on Fastweb. I have tried for years and have gotten nothing! (and I have a 3.96GPA). I am a cancer survivor and haven’t received anything for them.

Preferably, go straight to organizations that provide scholarships to those with have undergone such experience.
